Objective:
The learner will explore his/her motivation examining what and why skills and values and how this relates to being enterprising/freelancing/creating an enterprise
Overview:
This session gives learners some ways to start a self-audit of skills and values. He/She can begin to evaluate what that means for him/her in connection with being enterprising or starting to freelance or creating an enterprise.
Activity:
Introduction draws upon ideas of "what lights my fire, how I made my creativity pay and understanding that you as a creative have something of value to sell!"
Set context of understanding yourself and your values and skills and how that leads to a sweet spot!
Consider some questions about WHY you do what you do, encouraging a reflective mindset from the start. Some context on skills auditing, easier to do than values so can be given as a task away from session, I have a list of skills as verbs (see link below) which can be useful too. Substantive part of session is on values Paper slips of individual values are given out as sets to small groups of around 5 people maximum. Encourage them to use the power of the group to discuss and choose around 5 that chime with them. If learners are in a suitable space and you know they are willing to participate this can be done as an active networking/moving around trading game where each learner is randomly given some values and has to negotiate and talk to others to swap until a set that suit them are collected. When 5 are selected give learners A4 paper, get them to fold in half an in half again to form a landscape orientated sheet with four columns. At the top of each column the following headings; always important, sometimes important, rarely important, never important. They can now write or place (if wanting to photograph the take away) their top 5 in always important or sometimes important and consider any they completely rejected for never important and look at and compare and debate with others. Learning can be drawn out from debate heard in small groups or requested from sharing, any interesting observation on definitions or conflict over values etc. I would add signposts to further reflection tools and also a brief what we offer to support enterprise and how to enquire, offer myself for one to one if appropriate/requested Useful to end with an action point from this exercise and I usually use Pete Mosley visual coaching cards for this, though not essential Skill Development: Reflection Self-awareness Application of own learning to career context Group discussion and expression of opinion
